Decentraland to Launch Desktop Client with Major Enhancements
Ethereum-based metaverse platform Decentraland is gearing up to release a desktop client that brings significant improvements to its graphics and performance.
The update is set to address the limitations of the current browser-based version, which has been criticized for its technical shortcomings.
The desktop client will enter public beta on October 22, offering users a more seamless experience in the virtual world.
What can we expect from this update?
The upcoming desktop client introduces enhanced visuals and improved in-game mechanics. Whilst Decentraland retains its cartoon-like style, the new version features a higher level of detail, smoother animations, and a more dynamic environment. The platform’s performance has also been significantly upgraded, resulting in faster frame rates and reduced loading times.
Agnieszka Besz, Engineering Manager for Decentraland, confirmed that the desktop client supports more concurrent users in the same space. “With over 200 avatars in the same place, the client has been holding without any issues,” Besz stated. Previously, realms were limited to 100 users due to performance constraints.
This update marks a shift in Decentraland’s focus toward enhancing the social aspect of the platform. The developers plan to introduce features like quests and badge systems, which will track player progress and promote social engagement.
Events such as Decentraland’s annual three-day music festival, scheduled for November, will likely serve as a key test of the platform’s new capabilities to handle large gatherings.
What’s next to Decentraland?
Although the desktop client is the current priority, Decentraland is considering entering the virtual reality (VR) space in the future.
The team views VR as a way to offer a more immersive social experience but has stated that VR integration will only be pursued once the desktop version’s performance is fully optimized.
For now, the desktop client represents a critical step in improving Decentraland’s overall functionality and user experience. The public beta will be available on October 22 for both Mac and Windows users.
